Preliminary Task

This is my Preliminary Task. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXjjVp3VVQg&feature=plcp

American Pie Title Sequence Analysis

Frame 1: In this establishing shot we see a messy room. This gives us the impression that the main character is lazy, untidy and maybe a slacker. Also messiness links with youth, so it associates the scene with the teen genre.

Frame 2: This shot shows what would seem like the main character with a look of euphoria on his face. The shot is focused in on him, with the background blurry, which suggests that he will be the focus of the film. The expression on his face suggests that he is doing something illicit.

Frame 3: The over the shoulder shot focused on the television shows where he is looking and what his attention is focused on.  The teen genre is further emphasized here due to the messiness around the room once again.

Frame 4: The white sock in this show represents the purity, youth and innocence of the young man, however this is juxtaposed within the next shot.

Frame 5: A new character is introduced within this frame with the use of a wide shot.  The character appears to be the mother of the main character. We see the boy trying to hide what he is doing which suggests the female character holds some authority or that he is embarrassed.

Frame 6: A pillow is used to hide what the boy is doing. The mother seems unaware at this point in time.

Frame 7: The two shot is used here to show the mother giving the boy a kiss.

Genre update

This post is just to update on my genre choice. I initially went with the thriller genre as I thought it would be an interesting genre to do. However I have found that lots of other people chose this genre as well, and so I have decided to go with the teen movie genre.

This advert is just a little taste of what I want my opening scene to resemble.

(More analysis to come on teen movies soon)

Shot Reverse Shot & 180 Degree Rule

Previously we learnt about Shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. The 180 degree rule is an imaginary line that allows the audience to comprehend where the characters in the film are located in perspective of each other. Shot reverse shot is used to show a coversation between two characters.

Here is an example piece of work  to show our understanding of the subject.

Watchmen Title Sequence Analysis

Frame 1: In the opening shot we see a man dressed in a costume punching someone with a gun in the face. This immediately suggests that the film will fall under the superhero genre, an action sub genre. The sepia-like effect and the retro clothes set the scene and time period of the film, suggesting that it is set around the 1940's. The blood coming from the mans mouth suggests that the film will contain a lot of violence. Overall this is a good establishing shot of the film.

Frame 2: In the second frame we see a female character surrounded by police officers. The use of the colour yellow in both the characters costume and the opening credits suggest: Joy, happiness and energy as yellow is often associated with these things. The unhappy look on the police officers faces suggest that they are angry with the heroine because she is solving all the crimes instead of leaving it to them.

Frame 3: The main focus of this shot is the superhero apprehending the villain. The fact that the superhero is smiling suggests that it was more than easy for him to catch the villain and stop the crime. The bag of money which he is holding suggests that greed was the driving force of the villain. The gun however, gives the shot violent undertones, showing the true danger in which the hero exposed himself too.

Frame 4: Within this shot the title of the film is revealed. The large bold yellow title suggests optimism, this coeincindes with the fact that all the characters are smiling. The use of the bold yellow title also suggests comic books. Here we see that the film could also fall under the sci-fi genre as the character on the right appears to not be human.

Frame 5: The use of the plane in this shot suggests movement and passing of time. The explosion in the background could be associated with war and death.

Frame 6: This shot shows two women kissing. The fact that no one is disgusted suggests that people were willing to overlook the homosexual action because she is a superhero and she has an element of power, even though homosexuality was shunned until quite recently. The ribbons and celebrations occuring in the background show happiness and delight that the war is over. The picture also shows an alternate timelime to the famous "sailor kissing nurse photo".

Frame 7: Here we see the film could begin to take darker tones. We see a dead superhero laying on the floor, which suggests people could be becoming sick of them interfering with things. The use of the red in the background associates itself with death, and the fact that people are photographing it shows their interest in death.

Frame 8: The words "Happy Retirement Sally" are prominent within this shot. The fact that she is retiring suggests that her superhero days are over and that she will settle down and live a normal life. In this shot we see some of the superheroes we saw in Frame 4, however there is a lot less of them which could suggest many of them have died or been murdered.

Frame 9: In the final scene we see a group of people with flaming torches and weapons surrounding a shop, out to kill the superheroes. This gives us an impression that the days of superheroes are over.

Game of Thrones title sequence analysis

Frame 1: In the initial shot the genre of the show is revealed. The use of dragons links it to the fantasy genre. The bright light used goes alongside the dragons, and could be said to be the breath of a dragon.

Frame 2: The use of the map in this shot shows the vast expanse of land in which the show will be set it.

Frame 3: Clockwork effects used in these shots could suggest the passing of time and the length of which the series runs.

Frame 4: The tall building used in these shots suggests civilisation and progress. We also see some titles in this show, which are in a very retro and acient font which suggests the time period of the show.

Frame 5: The small houses used in this shot show a contrasts between the tall buildings used in the previous shot. It shows the rich conditions that people in the cities live in, in comparison to the small cramped condition which peasants live in.

Frame 6: The use of the tree with a face on suggests some type of deity, which links the show in with religion and gives it a mythical feel.

Frame 7: In this shot we see a continuation of the first shot with the dragons, however it is slightly changed. This is like a storyboard of the show. The use of the dark tones in contrast with the light suggest a battle between good and evil.

Frame 8: The cold setting shown in this shot shows a contrast to the more summery landscapes shown previously. The use of the big ice wall could show trying to keep something out of the summer environment, maybe some type of evil.

Frame 9: In the final shot the title of the series is introduced. "Game of Thrones" suggests confusion within the monarchy as it is usually a serious thing.

"Give me the money"

This is just a link to a practice shooting that we did in order to practice the 180 degree rule and match on action, which we had been learning about earlier that day. Match on action is when either an action which occurs in shot 1 is completed in another shot. For example a man reaching for a glass and then a close up of his hand taking the glass.
